Mandalas have been used as part of the spiritual practices associated with many of the Eastern faiths and religions. Using complex geometric patterns which traditionally represent the layers of universal experience, all contained within a circular shape, Mandalas have also been used extensively in mental health practices to provide a contained space for reflection and processing the internal world of each creator.
The power of this work comes from the collaborative element, as participants shared through the simple gesture of placement of each coloured top, catalysing a meditative approach to fill the shapes with vibrant patterns and colour. Once the beauty of the Mandala is complete, it is then dispersed and disappears through the act of shaking the plastic sheet it is created on. This symbolises the importance of recycling each plastic top making up this artwork to help care for the planet.
